First Colony Life Insurance Corporate Headquarters

Overview

The project that started it all. In 1988, as the architect of record, Alan Adler spearheaded the two year, six story, 200,000 sf addition & the 80,000 sf renovation located in the historic Lynchburg downtown warehouse district overlooking the James River. The project cost in 2017 dollars would exceed $50.7 million using the CPI inflation adjustment calculator. As a result, Bill Greenwood and Alan formed and founded the Greenwood Partnership, and built an architecture & engineering firm with more than 60 employees in the first year.

For five years Alan was the architecture department head (project planning in excess of $100 million dollars worth of project costs) until 1993 when the firm’s strategic planning allowed Alan to independently separate the architecture department and form his own independent architecture company. The two firms continued to worked closely together until the Greenwood Partnership was bought out in the late 1990’s. Many of the individual design professional relationships formed in those initial five years are still active today. The building is now owned by Genworth Financial.
